Dawkins named league MVP
A former Holly Springs High School Hawk has received a prestigious basketball honor. Kenny Dawkins has been named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference player of the year. Dawkins has been the starter at point guard for Arizona Western College ever since he arrived on campus in August 2005. Unlike last year, when many of the sophomores took the scoring load, Dawkins became a scorer and assist man this season and responded well, according to head coach Kelly Green. Dawkins was one of the ACCAC leaders in scoring (17 points per game, 12th ACCAC), assists (4.4, fifth ACCAC), steals (three per game, second), and he was the conference champion in free throw percentage (85.6 percent). For his efforts, after receiving All-ACCAC second team a year ago, Dawkins was not only named to this year’s Region I first team, but was also the top vote-getter on the All-ACCAC first team and was named ACCAC player of the year. The Matadors captured the Region I Division I championship Saturday night by beating Eastern Arizona 81-60 on the road. Arizona Western had four players in double figures – led by Dawkins’ 27 points. The win gave the Matadors their third straight Region I championship plaque. Arizona Western (27-5), ranked 10th in the country in junior college basketball, moved on to face the College of Southern Idaho Tuesday night of this week in the district finals at Salt Lake City, Utah.
