ObituariesDandle Ayers Sr. Dandle (Big Blue) Ayers Sr., 48, of Holly Springs, died Dec. 13, 2006 at Baptist Memorial East Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Services were held Dec. 16. Rev. Lee Robertson officiated. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He leaves his wife, Effie Ayers; two sons, Dandle Ayers Jr., Daryl Ayers; three brothers, Danny Ayers, Wheeler Matthews, Wayne Mays, all of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Corretta Harris of Ashland; three stepsons, Issac Mayfield, Tyrone Mayfield, both of Holly Springs, Curtis Mayfield of Byhalia; and six grandchildren. Olivia Stephenson Batts Olivia Stephenson Batts, 80, of Holly Springs, died Dec. 7, 2006 at her home. She was the widow of Early Lee Batts. She was a member of the choir, Women’s Missionary group and president of the stewardess board. Services were held at 1 p.m. on Dec. 13 at New Hope CME Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Robert J. Matthews Jr. officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. She leaves two daughters, Earlene Smith of Holly Springs, Connie Sipp of Warner Robins, Ga.; three sons, Charles David Batts of Kileen, Tx., Robert Earl Batts of Memphis, Tenn., Donzel Batts of Wichita, Kan.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Lee Brooks; and a son, Early Lee Batts Jr. Pallbearers were Ernest Cunningham, Clyde Nevels, Wilbert Brown, Jimmy Lee Shipp, Alvin Barksdale, Robert Lee Batts, Ivon Johnson and Turner Lester. Dr. Eric Maurice Beck, Jr., 66, of Little Rock, Ark., formerly of Holly Springs, died Tuesday, December 6, 2006, at the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital in Little Rock, Ark. He served as the pastor of Baptist churches in Little Rock, Arkansas; Belmont, Birmingham, Decatur, Florence, Mobile and Saraland, Alabama; Greenville and Rocky Mountain, South Carolina and Newborn, North Carolina. Services were held at 10 a.m. on December 11 at Griffin Leggett-Healey & Roth Funeral Home. Burial was in the U. S. Military Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock, Ark. He leaves his wife, Flossie M. Beck, two sons Andre Harris and Dewayne Johnson, both of Little Rock; a brother, Alva Beck of Holly Springs; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Everett C. Beck. William Cross William (Al) Cross, 43, of Byhalia, died Dec. 14, 2006 at The Med in Memphis, Tenn. He was team lead for McKesson Pharmaceuticals. He was a Baptist and a hot air balloon pilot. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 17 at Twin Oaks Funeral Home in Southaven. Burial was in Byhalia Cemetery. He leaves his wife of 4-1/2 years, Linda G. Cross; his father, Johnny Cross of Vidalia, La.; and a brother, John Michael Cross of Byhalia. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret C. Whitehead; stepfather, Guy Whitehead; his sister, Michele Whitehead; and uncle, John David Cummings. The family requests that memorials be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or The Med Trauma Center in Memphis, Tenn. Clifton Ray Langley, 80, of Holly Springs, died Dec. 11, 2006 at Alliance HealthCare. He was a veteran of World War II, a Mason, volunteer fireman, treasurer of the local Disabled American Veterans. He was a V.A. Administration surgical technician. Services were held at 1 p.m. on Dec. 15 at Chandler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Wofford Cemetery, Vernon, Ala. John Prothro officiated. He leaves his wife, LaVona Langley of Holly Springs; a son, Phillip Ray Langley of Orlando, Fla.; two stepsons, David Anderson of Arlington, Tenn., Jerry Anderson of Memphis, Tenn.; two stepdaughters, Nancy Rhinehart of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Wendy Brower of Dunlap, Tenn.; two grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Langley. Etheleen Howell Etheleen Howell, 45, of Verona, died Dec. 9, 2006 at North MS Medical Center in Tupelo. She attended Central High School in Flint, Mich. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 13 at Shiloh CME Church in Fulton. Burial was in River Rest Cemetery in Flint. She leaves her husband, Dwayne Howell of Flint, Mich.; three children, Nicole Logan, Dwayne Howell, Walter Howell, all of Verona; six sisters, Pearlie Traylor, Melba Roby, Margie Henry, Theresa Hinkle, all of Flint, Ruby Hinkle of St. Louis, Mo., Deborah Jones of New Albany; four brothers, Lord Hinkle, James Hinkle, Charles Hinkle, all of Flint, Gary Christian of Fulton and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Christian, and a sister, Barbara Williams. Harvey E. Mask, 84, died Dec. 14, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto. He was a member of Sarah Baptist Church and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 16 at Sarah Baptist Church. Burial was in Longtown Cemetery. Mask; two daughters, Diane Smith of Nesbit, Dolores Chrestman of Hernando; five sons, Delane Mask of Randolph, Wayne Mask of Senatobia, Dick Mask of Lee Summit, Mo., Billy Mask of Sarah, Perry Mask of Holly Springs; a sister, Bertha Wallace of Heber Springs, Ark.; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Amelia Joy Mask, and a son, Donnie Mask. Chloe Marie Paton Chloe Marie Paton, 90, of Potts Camp, died Dec. 11, 2006 at her home. She was a Methodist. She was the widow of Robert H. Paton, her husband of 60 years. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 13 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Cornersville Cemetery. Bro. Don Newton officiated. She leaves her daughter, Katherine Duncan of Potts Camp; a sister, Mable Paton of Potts Camp; a grandson, Stacy Duncan of Ashland; a granddaughter, Karla Miller of Potts Camp; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother. Mary Walker Jones Penilton Mary Walker Jones Penilton, 65, of Slayden, died Dec. 12, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Collierville, Tenn. She was a member of Hudsonville CME Church, a member of the choir, trustee, stewardess, evangelist on the local and district level, president of the Lift Group, Heroines of Jericho and H.W. Byers Athletic Booster Club. She was a driver for Meals on Wheels, Community Action Agency. Services were held at 12 noon on Dec. 17 at Hudsonville CME Church Family Life Center. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Bobby G. Wilson officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. She leaves her husband, Robert L. Penilton; a daughter, Patricia A. Glass of Slayden; four sons, Michael Penilton of Laws Hill, Ajacca B. Penilton, Robert E. Penilton, Christopher G. Penilton, all of Slayden; her mother, Lillie Littlejohn Moore of Slayden; four sisters, Emma Jones, Cora Moore, Everlean Moore, all of Memphis, Tenn., Annie Lee Mayfield of Slayden; a brother, Rufus Moore of Memphis, Tenn.; and 16 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Booker T. and Mary Briggs, who raised her; and a brother, Hiram Crutcher. Shirley Mae Herod Vaughn Shirley Mae Herod Vaughn, 49, of Abbeville, died Dec. 10, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital - Oxford. She graduated from Lafayette High School. She was employed with Emerson Electric for 26 years. Services were held at 1 p.m. on Dec. 16 at Jesus Crown of Life Apostolic in Oxford. Burial was in St. Peters Memorial Cemetery. Rev. She leaves her husband, Avant Vaughn Jr.; her three children, Avant Jermaine Vaughn, Felicia Vaughn, Ashley Vaughn, all of Abbeville; three brothers, Leland Herod of Oxford, Charles Herod of Abbeville, James Herod of Oxford; four sisters, Dorothy Fisher of Indianapolis, Ind., Flora Dean, Gloria Bogard of Oxford, Bobbie Burton of Abbeville; and eight grandchildren.
