H.W. Byers athlete earns all-state in cross country
By CLAUDE VINSON
The athletic department at H.W. Byers High School has gradually become a notable entity into high school athletics in Marshall County.
One reason could be students like Marvin Rayford. The junior has been a member of the Lions’ varsity basketball team since the ninth grade and has been playing basketball since seventh grade.
He has also been a member of the track team and this season when Byers entered the cross country arena, he joined. Rayford competed in four meets. The last being the state championship in Jackson. He placed 13th in a field of 140 trekkers, which was good enough for All-State. The first 14 runners earn the title.
When on the hardwood, Rayford averages 13 points per game. In the classroom he has a GPA of 3.7. And his favorite subject is math.
He aspires to enter the University of Memphis after his high school career and carry on his pursuits of basketball, track and math.
