Holly High’s Clevin Hannah receives statewide recognition

Clevin Hannah, a senior player for the Holly Springs High School Hawks, was named Statewide Athlete of the Week (January 23-28) by The Clarion Ledger, a daily newspaper based in Jackson.

Hannah scored 26 points in an 87-32 win over Independence and 23 points in a 58-50 victory over Horn Lake as the two-time defending Class 3A champion Hawks stretched their winning streak to 44 games (dating back to last season).

“Clevin’s doing a great job,” coach Naylond Hayes told The Clarion-Ledger sports staff. “He’s the brains of the team. I’ve never coached a better shooter in high school.”

Hannah, a 6-foot Dandy Dozen guard, is averaging 20 points, 11 assists and four steals for the top-ranked Hawks (then 23-0). He averaged 18 points, four assists and three steals as a junior.

The spotlight in The Clarion-Ledger included other information about Hannah. He was born Nov. 15, 1987, in Rochester, N.Y. His favorite NBA player is Allen Iverson.

Hannah and the Hawks are looking for their place in the state’s basketball record books. A Mississippi High School Activities Association boys team has not gone undefeated since New Albany went 36-0 in 1984-85.

“Everybody is talking about it,” Hannah said. “It’s a big goal for us. We’re trying really hard to do it.”
