Dawkins, Matadors off to 4-0 season start Holly Springs’ own Kenny Dawkins has scored 70 points in four games to help lead Arizona Western College to a 4-0 start in the junior college ranks. The fourth-ranked Matadors tipped off the season with a 71-68 victory over Snow College in the Salt Lake Tournament. Dawkins gunned in 21 points to lead Arizona Western, which was up by 11 points with 4:00 to go in the contest. The Matadors then met the host school the next night and escaped with a big 69-61 win. Dawkins was again in double-digit scoring with 10. He also led in rebounds with eight. “I think this was great experience for us to come here and play two quality teams, and go down to the wire in both games,” head coach Kelly Green said. Arizona Western then broke the 100-point mark in their next two games. The Matadors beat the Australian Select Anzacs 117-43. Dawkins was the high-point man with 20. AWC had five players in double figures. Then Dawkins scored 19, including five three-point shots, in a 140-44 blowout of Fort Huachuca last Saturday. The Matadors began the game on a 28-2 run and never trailed. Dawkins is a sophomore guard who played for coach Naylond Hayes at Holly Springs High School. He led the Hawks to state championships in 2004 and 2005. The Matadors play in the Eastern Arizona Classic this weekend.
