Halloween in the park The staff at Wall Doxey State Park is gearing up for the 18th annual Halloween Festivities. As usual, the park will offer various activities to entertain and excite all ages. The festivities will be held on Friday, October 27, and Saturday, October 28 from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. There will be a small fee to participate in the haunted house, hay ride, and games. Also, there will be a concession stand where food and drinks will be available. Profits will benefit the park and help ensure future community oriented activities. Everyone is encouraged to come and enjoy the activities and to familiarize themselves with the state park. Again this year, the haunted house will be held in the basement of the lodge (main office). The basement has a number of rooms that will be decorated to frighten and spook even the bravest soul. In the haunted house, you will encounter various scary and ugly characters that will make its visitors stay a short but an unforgettable one. This year the park is pleased to have the Boy Scouts Troop #43 and parents assisting the park staff in the haunted house. The park is sure with their innovative ideas they will provide an extra asset to this year’s haunted house. Although the hay ride is not haunted, it still carries its occupants through eerie places, such as the park’s 65 campsites. All campsites will be invited to participate by entering the contest for the best Halloween decorated campsite. As in the past, this year’s activities will include a costume contest for all ages on Saturday night only. Starting promptly at 7:30 p.m. awards will be awarded in several age categories: 0 – 2 years, 3 – 6 years, 7 – 12 years, 13 – 17 years and 18 years and up. It will be a great time to relax and enjoy the beauty of the park and enjoy the cool October night. In years past, the hay ride has been a particular favorite of small children who may have never experienced an old fashioned hay ride. There will be many carnival type games in the lodge. These games are usually enjoyed most by preschoolers and elementary school children, but the cake walk accommodates the parents and adults with enjoyment too. Park manager, Lyle Richardson, says the park depends on volunteers to make this family event a success that it has been in years past. Anyone wishing to volunteer or donate a cake for our cake walk, please call the park office. The games include miniature golf, wheel of fortune and various other games. A concession stand will be located in the lodge where hamburgers, hot dogs, chili, hot chocolate, and much more will be available. Wall Doxey State Park is located at Holly Springs, 24 miles north of Oxford, and six miles south of Holly Springs off MS Highway 7, and 40 miles southeast of Memphis, Tenn. via U.S. Highway 78 East, and 70 miles northwest of Tupelo, via U.S. Highway 78 West. Facilities at Wall Doxey State Park include 65 developed campsites with 20, 30 and 50 amp electric service, nine fully furnished vacation cabins, 60-acre spring-fed lake, two 20-hole disc golf courses, eight overnight group cabins for retreats and reunions, banquet facilities for up to 150 people (catering available), a picnic area with four covered group pavilions (catering available) for company or family reunion picnics, a playground, two nature trails and an abundance of trees, lots of wildlife and beautiful scenery.
