Byers teams sweep Ashland to tip off new season By BARRY BURLESON H.W. Byers started a new basketball season in fine fashion. The Lady Lions and Lions traveled to nearby Ashland and swept their Benton County rival on Monday, Oct. 16. The Byers girls built a commanding 31-12 halftime lead and cruised from there, winning 74-33. “We got off to a good start,” said head coach Jason Thompson. “We got those first-game jitters out of the way.” Rachel Jones was the top gun for the Lady Lions. She scored 16. Brittany Todd and Jessica Smith added 11 and 10 points, respectively. For Ashland, Sandricka Bowen scored 13. The Byers and Ashland boys hooked up in an old-fashioned shootout, with the Lions taking the win, 98-86. Sylvester Kilgore got a victory in his first game as head coach of the varsity boys. Byers led 47-40 at the half and 73-57 after three quarters. Four Lions scored in double digits – Justin Owens with 24, Marvin Rayford and Tristan Kizer with 16 each and Frederick Jones with 12. Four Devils also hit for double figures – Darnell Anderson with 28, Calvin Hampton with 19, Quenton Williams with 17 and Quinton Hampton with 10. Byers hosted a preseason classic Saturday with four schools participating. Coach Thompson said the day went well and the competition was beneficial for all teams. H.W. Byers teams return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 7, when they host Marshall County rival Byhalia. Report News:
