Holly Springs native named to Top 40 list By BARRY BURLESON A Holly Springs native was recently named as one of the top business and community leaders by The Business Journal, based in Johnson City, Tenn. The monthly publication serves the Tri-Cities Tennessee, Southwest Virginia and Western North Carolina region. Mike Cummings, a 1990 graduate of Holly Springs High School, is a member of the Top 40 Under 40 Class of 2006 for the area. He relocated in February 2005 to Johnson City, where he is training manager for American Water Heater Co. “This is a big honor for me because being here for such a brief period, it means I’ve come in and made an impact in the community in a short time,” Cummings said. He moved to Johnson City from Memphis. Since 1994, he has developed and implemented training/human resource programs for business, industry and government. As founder of American Water Heater Co.’s Adoption Sponsorship and Affiliation Program, Cummings has placed the company on the cutting edge of developing the community and workforce of the future. ASAP works with high school students in the areas of leadership, attitudes, communication, motivation, decision-making, problem-solving, personal and organization effectiveness, team building, interviewing skills, technical aptitude and other areas of technology. “I enjoy working in the schools and trying to change children’s lives,” Cummings said. “It’s all about serving my community and trying to make it better. It’s never about you; it’s always about somebody else.” His volunteer work includes American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and United Way campaign chairman, just to name a few. Cummings said he received a great educational foundation from Holly High and its teachers. He was also all conference and all state in baseball for the Hawks. “I had some great instructors,” Cummings said. “They motivated me to do better. It was a very good start. Then I went in a direction of trying to help others.” He attended Mississippi State University for three years and graduated from Crichton College in Memphis. He is the son of Charles and Evelyn Cummings of Holly Springs. His dad is a longtime educator. “He has always wanted to make a difference in people’s lives,” Cummings said. “I guess that’s where I get it from.” Cummings and his wife of 15 years, Bobbi, have twin boys, Kevin and Kalvin, age 13.
