Byers students nominated for Wendy’s Heisman H.W. Byers High School’s Victoren Hooker and Brittany Todd have been honored with a nomination for the prestigious Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. The program, awarded in conjunction with the collegiate Heisman, celebrates the achievements of the nation’s top high school seniors both in and out of the classroom. Principal Gary Hannah nominated these two promising leaders for their academic aptitude, athletic talent and exceptional commitment to their school and communities. “At H.W. Byers High School, we prepare our students for success by encouraging them to develop in all areas of their lives,” he said. “Wendy’s High School Heisman is the ultimate award we can bestow on our students for their achievements throughout high school.” Victoren Hooker excels in both basketball, track and baseball, but it is in baseball where he plans to continue his endeavors. At the present time, he is still vacillating concerning both his college and career choices. However, he is leaning towards Ole Miss with a major in secondary education along with coaching. Brittany Todd excels in basketball and softball. She is undecided about her choices, as well, but is also leaning towards the University of Mississippi. The Wendy’s organization will select six males and six females as state finalists, and then one male and one female to represent Mississippi at the national level, and then six males and six females will be selected nationally and aired on ESPN in December. Linda Spaulding, counselor at H. W. Byers, helped the students with their applications. She has had three former students be selected as state finalists, one of which was Mississippi’s female representative. “The application process itself is long but the work that it takes to qualify is much harder,” she said. “This is the first time since I have been a counselor here at Byers that we have had students qualify as nominees. It is a thrill to see these two young people as well as many of their classmates excel in so many areas.” Report News:
