Benefit Saturday for Shaw family By SUE WATSON The Clydesdale Christmas Store has teamed up with a group of sponsors to throw a benefit Saturday, August 26, for the family of Morgan Shaw. All proceeds will be deposited in the Shaw family fund at Merchants & Farmers Bank in Holly Springs to help defray medical expenses. The event kicks off at 2 p.m. and runs until midnight at the Collins/Hurdle VFW Post 5697 in Holly Springs. There will be fried catfish and the works and drinks available for purchase, musical entertainment, an auction of baked goods and cakes at 5 p.m. and plenty of space for children to play at the party. Admission is $20 and includes a catfish plate dinner prepared by sheriff Kenny Dickerson and his cooking team; however, the public can also pick up catfish plates for $10 each and not stay for the entertainment. Advanced orders for smoked Boston butts and admission tickets are being sold up until the event. Tickets for Boston butts prepared by six volunteer cooking teams can be purchased for a donation of $25. Place orders for Boston butts or purchase advanced admission tickets at The Rental Barn on Craft Street, at the VFW Post or from individuals who will be selling tickets before the event. “We would like to sell as many orders for Boston butts and admission tickets as possible before the event to help organizers estimate the amount of food and beverages to have on hand,” Ronnie Luther said. Catfish for the fish fry is provided by an anonymous donor, Luther said. Sheriff Dickerson will provide other ingredients for the fish fry. The organizers are accepting donations of items to auction. Notify the VFW if you plan to provide a cake, pie or other baked dessert for auction and bring the desserts to the VFW before 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26. Donna Boyuka, Sharon Jackson and Susie Sexton are accepting desserts to sell by the serving or whole during the benefit. Individuals who wish to donate a dessert may leave the dish at Granny Walnut’s on Friday, Aug. 25, or bring the dessert to the VFW Saturday. People who live in the Potts Camp area may call Jackson at 394-0674 to drop off desserts. Call Jenny Janssen at the VFW at 252-9995, if you want to volunteer to play music or sing on stage. Six bands are lined up so far, including Kenny Brown. The benefit is co-sponsored by the VFW, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, sheriff Kenny Dickerson, tax collector Betty Byrd and Senator Ralph Doxey. The Clydesdale Christmas Store will announce a sizable contribution to the Shaw family fund at the event, Luther said. Donations to the Shaw family fund are being accepted anytime, including the day of the benefit, Luther said. Report News:
