Lady Pats put scare in big school Prep By BARRY BURLESON Marshall Academy had what most might consider a disappointing 1-3 week on the softball diamond, but two of those losses were to Class AAA powers. The Lady Patriots suffered a 5-4 conference loss to Lee (Clarksdale) Tuesday, Aug. 15. MA was leading 4-1 in its home opener but Lee tied the game in the final inning and went on to win in an extra inning. Getting one run-batted-in each for Marshall were Mandy Bolden, Lauren Alexander and Heather Tomlinson. Alexander was the losing pitcher. She gave up 11 hits and one walk and struck out four. Starkville Tournament The Class AA Lady Patriots hit the road to Starkville Saturday for an invitational tournament. In their first game, they fell 6-2 to Class AAA Madison Ridgeland 6-2. “Errors really hurt us in this game,” said assistant coach Carlton Gibson. Traci Rodgers and Alexander had one RBI each. Alexander took the pitching loss. She gave up five hits and one walk and struck out four. Marshall bounced back in their second game of the tourney to blast Carroll Academy 9-3. Kristen Feathers earned the pitching win. She threw three innings, giving up two hits, one walk and one run. She struck out two. Courtney Gibson pitched four innings in relief. She gave up five hits and two runs. She struck out three. Getting two RBIs each were Alexander, H. Tomlinson and Rodgers. Casey Gibson added one RBI. In its third game of the tournament, MA was pitted against one of Class AAA’s best, Jackson Prep. The Lady Patriots played well in a 2-0 setback. “We played an excellent defensive game against a much older Jackson Prep team,” Coach Gibson said. “We were excited to keep them to only two runs.” Casey Gibson was the losing pitcher. She gave up six hits, walked two and struck out three. “Offensively, we would get base-runners on but could not generate any runs,” he said. Marshall Academy, 4-4 on the young season, was scheduled to visit Kirk Academy on Monday of this week and then host Bayou Academy on Tuesday. Next Monday, Aug. 28, the Lady Patriots host Lee (Marianna, Ark.) for a 4 p.m. contest. Next Tuesday, Aug. 29, they travel to Senatobia for a 4 p.m. game against Magnolia Heights. Report News:
