County firemen practice putting out LP gas blaze By BARRY BURLESON Flames shot 40 feet into the air. The intense heat reached approximately 3,500 degrees. Several groups of Marshall County firemen moved forward as teams, hoses in hand, and repeatedly extinguished the enormous fire, which simulated an LP (liquefied petroleum) truck ablaze. County OKs waste plan By SUE WATSON The Marshall County Board of Supervisors adopted a solid waste plan on a 4-1 vote of the board Monday night, after meeting in executive session with the Holly Springs Board of Aldermen to iron out differences they had in the proposed plan. Rust enrollment steady By BARRY BURLESON Rust College started welcoming freshmen back to campus last weekend, and orientation runs through Saturday. Upperclassmen begin reporting this weekend. Classes begin next Wednesday, Aug. 30. Longtime city clerk dies at age 85 By SUE WATSON He often said if he ever did anything worthwhile in life, it was at the city clerk’s office. Funeral services for William “Billy” Wright Newsom, 85, were held Monday at First United Methodist Church in Holly Springs with burial in historic Hill Crest Cemetery. Local architect returns to country of Jordan for third archaeological dig By CHELIUS CARTER This was my third season with the American Archaeological Expedition to Abila of the Decapolis in north Jordan and it was far more interesting than was scheduled. It is usually expected to be hot in the north Jordanian desert — this season it got really hot — and I’m not only speaking of the weather. Benefit Saturday for Shaw family By SUE WATSON The Clydesdale Christmas Store has teamed up with a group of sponsors to throw a benefit Saturday, August 26, for the family of Morgan Shaw. Hummingbird Celebration set The seventh annual Hummingbird Migration Celebration will be held September 8-10 at Strawberry Plains Audubon Center in Holly Springs. Everyone is invited to see the spectacle of ruby-throated hummingbirds in migration. Other festivities, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, include a nature trade show, youth activity tent and concessions. Bob and Martha Sargent will be back for their fifth year of hummingbird banding. Police investigate several break-ins By BARRY BURLESON The Holly Springs Police Department advises it will be conducting checkpoints throughout the city during the Labor Day holiday.
