Lady Patriots set high goals By BARRY BURLESON The Marshall Academy Lady Patriots broke new ground in 2005 and they hope to dig a little deeper this season. The MA softball team opened the 2006 campaign Tuesday of this week at Lee Academy (Clarksdale). Saturday, the Lady Patriots will participate in the North Delta Round Robin Tournament and next Tuesday, Aug. 8, they go to Bayou Academy. The first home game is Tuesday, Aug. 15, versus Lee at 4 p.m. This year’s squad will be led by head coach Susan Rodgers and assistant Louanne Tomlinson. “We’re expecting big things from this group,” Tomlinson said. “They’re looking good in practice.” Last year the Lady Patriots made the state tournament for the first time in school history after placing fourth in the North. Their season record was 14-9. “This year we’re looking to finish higher in the North which will give us a better chance at State,” Tomlinson said. Basically the entire team returns. MA lost just two players to graduation. And the Lady Patriots remain young, with no seniors on this year’s squad. “We’re excited and looking forward to the season,” Tomlinson said.
