MA downs Delta, Hernando in tourney By BARRY BURLESON Marshall Academy finished 2-2 in its own summer baseball tournament over the weekend. The Patriots, coached by Jimmy Hicks, knocked off Delta and Hernando by identical 10-4 scores, before losing 11-9 to Carroll and 16-4 to DeSoto Central. DeSoto Central went on to finish 5-0 and win the eight-team tournament. Rossville took home second. “We had a good turnout for the tournament,” Hicks said. “Everybody enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun.” The most interesting of the games was MA’s late-night contest Saturday with Carroll. The Patriots went up 1-0 in the first, and then Carroll bounced back with 11 runs in the inning. “We scratched back to 11-5, and then the fog rolled in,” Hicks said. Marshall clawed to within 11-9, with two outs, the bases loaded and the middle of the batting order coming to the plate. “I looked in the outfield, and I couldn’t see the lights on the scoreboard, and I couldn’t see a single outfielder,” he said. The game was postponed until Sunday at 1 p.m. with MA falling 11-9. Marshall is playing about a 25-game schedule this summer. There are about six or eight games remaining. “It’s good to keep the kids playing during the summer,” Hicks said, “and still give them time to do some other things.” Report News:
