Literacy Alliance hands out scholarships By SUE WATSON Six deserving GED graduates were handed $500 scholarships to the college of their choice by the North Mississippi Literacy Alliance in Holly Springs at the regional meeting. Honored at reception Stephanie Ash Rodgers of Potts Camp was honored recently at a reception on the campus of the University of Mississippi as the 2005-2006 recipient of the Peter Aschoff Prize. Aschoff was an instructor at the University and a frequent contributor to “Living Blues” magazine. This prize honors the best paper of the year written on music of the American South, especially the blues, by an undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Mississippi. Faculty nominated papers and a committee of faculty members determines the award winner, who also receives an honorarium. Ms. Rodgers, who teaches at New Albany High School, graduated magna cum laude with her master’s degree in English at Ole Miss last summer. Her paper, a 90-page thesis which includes over 70 secondary sources, is entitled “Mama’s On the Warpath: The Badwoman Tradition in Feminist Blues Literature.” Her research examines how the lyrics of female blues singers affected the public’s perception of women, and how this effect translated into African-American women’s writing during and after the Harlem Renaissance. She plans to submit portions of her work for publication. Report News:
