Next Tuesday, June 6, is an election day with Democratic Primary congressional candidates on the ballot.
Polls across Marshall County will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Absentee balloting in the circuit clerk’s office continues during regular office hours. Also, the office in Holly Springs at the courthouse will be open this Saturday, June 3, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon for absentee voting.
Mail-in absentee ballots must be received in the circuit clerk’s office by Monday, June 5, at 5 p.m.
Two races are on the ballot, one for the position of U.S. senator and one for U.S. congressman.
In the Democratic Primary race, the winner will face Republican incumbent Trent Lott in November for the U.S. Senate seat. Candidates on the Democratic side are Bill Bowlin, Erik Fleming, James O’Keefe and Catherine M. Starr.
William Bambach, Joe Forsythe Jr., James K. (Ken) Hurt and Ron Shapiro are on the Democratic Primary election ballot for the U.S. House of Representatives. The winner will face Republican incumbent Congressman Roger Wicker in the November election.
Circuit Clerk Lucy Carpenter said Friday that Joe Forsythe Jr. has withdrawn from the race but his name will remain on the ballots since they were already printed.
Two voting precincts have been changed, Carpenter said.
They are One North Holly Springs Precinct, which is moving from Holy Family School to the Eddie Lee Smith Multi-Purpose Building.
The Byhalia Precinct is moving to the Byhalia Fire Station Number 2, located on the north side of the railroad tracks on Highway 309 North in Byhalia.
New Voting Machines
Marshall County voters will use the new Diebold touch-screen voting machines for the first time in this election. The machines are smaller than the touch-screen voting machines that were retired this January under provisions of the Help America Vote Act.
Carpenter said voters can practice on the new machines by going to www.touchandvote.ms.gov.
Instructions for use of the machines are read aloud.
