Mapp, Green win state championships
By BARRY BURLESON
Two athletes from the Marshall County School District, Bruce Mapp and Marquise Green, brought home gold medals from the recent State Track and Field Meet at Petal.
Mapp, of Potts Camp, captured first place in the pole vault competition (9-00) for the second straight season, last year in Class 1A and this time around in 2A.
The senior, also a member of the cross country team, gives a lot of credit for his success to coach Karen Green.
“Coach Green helped me out a lot,” Mapp said. “I couldn’t have done it without her. She took me to Tupelo to practice since we don’t have a pit.
“I love track. I’ve tried my best, and I’m really proud I haven’t missed a practice in four years.”
Mapp is the son of Terry and Rhonda Cook.
Green, a sophomore at Byhalia High School, claimed first place in the Class 3A triple jump competition (46-01). He is the son of Iwanna Rankins.
