Mapp, Green win state championships By BARRY BURLESON Two athletes from the Marshall County School District, Bruce Mapp and Marquise Green, brought home gold medals from the recent State Track and Field Meet at Petal. Mapp, of Potts Camp, captured first place in the pole vault competition (9-00) for the second straight season, last year in Class 1A and this time around in 2A. The senior, also a member of the cross country team, gives a lot of credit for his success to coach Karen Green. “Coach Green helped me out a lot,” Mapp said. “I couldn’t have done it without her. She took me to Tupelo to practice since we don’t have a pit. “I love track. I’ve tried my best, and I’m really proud I haven’t missed a practice in four years.” Mapp is the son of Terry and Rhonda Cook. Green, a sophomore at Byhalia High School, claimed first place in the Class 3A triple jump competition (46-01). He is the son of Iwanna Rankins. Other Potts Camp results Amanda Barstow finished sixth in the 3200 meter run (13:52), and eighth in both the 800 meter run (2:49.22) and the 1600 meter run (6:24). Brian Martin placed seventh in the long jump (19-09). Other Byhalia results The Byhalia boys finished 12th overall, with 16 points, in the field of 28. Marcus Guy placed fifth in the 400 meter dash (52.19). The Indians finished sixth in the 4x200 meter relay (1:31.46) and eighth in the 4x400 meter relay (3:57.30). Running for Byhalia were Green, Guy, Jeremy Lucas and Andrew Hearn. On the girls’ side, the Lady Indians finished fifth in both the 4x100 meter relay and 4x200 meter relay. Running were Queanisha Cathey, Takita Wells, Amy Harden and LaDonna Thomas. In the 100 meter dash. Wells placed fourth and Cathey sixth. Cathey finished fourth in the 200 meter dash. Wells came in seventh in the long jump. H.W. Byers The Lions placed sixth in the 4x100 meter relay competition in Class 2A (46.78). Running for Byers were Fredrick Jones, Devin Moore, Jarvis Ware and Chris Wilson. Wilson placed seventh in the 100 meter dash. and sixth in the 200 meter dash (23.38). Jones finished eighth in the 200 meter dash (23.68). Marvin Rayford placed sixth in the 800 meter run (2:15). Report News:
