Rodgers’ home run lifts MA past Carroll By BARRY BURLESON Marshall Academy’s second district win of the season was just as nerve-racking as the first. Less than a week after beating Kirk by one run in the bottom of the seventh, the Patriots got a two-run homer from Thomas Rodgers in the bottom of the eighth to knock off Carroll Academy 5-3. “That’s two in a row that we’ve won the hard way,” coach Jimmy Hicks said. “Both times we had a lead, then they tied it, but we kept fighting and came out on top.” MA led 3-1 going into the seventh inning Thursday night at home. Rodgers’ blast over the right field fence in the extra inning was his first career home run. He was two-of-three from the plate, and also earned the pitching win. The senior threw 123 pitches in eight innings. He gave up five hits, struck out seven and walked just two. Tyler Childers led off the eighth inning with a crucial base hit and moved to second on John David Sanders’ sacrifice bunt. Childers then scored on Rodgers’ game-winning homer. Also getting a hit each in the big victory were Tyler Sanders, Justin Gray, Jake Omedeo and Bo Bonds. Marshall improved to 2-3 in the district and 9-4 overall. “We’ve come a long way, from winning two games last year and no district games,” Hicks said. The Patriots are still in the playoff hunt. They entered competition this week in third place in the district. They visited Lee Academy Monday. Thursday, they host Indianola in a doubleheader. The top two teams in the district go on to the postseason. Also last week, Marshall Academy routed Ashland High School 14-0 at home. Tyler Sanders carried the big stick. He connected for two three-run homers and six runs batted in. Hunter Bolden and Jake Howell each hit solo homers. It was Bolden’s third home run of the season. Tyler Sanders earned the mound victory. He struck out seven in four innings of work. Rodgers three one inning in relief and struck out the side. Report News:
