Fire strikes Acme Brick By BARRY BURLESON Thirty-three firemen battled a blaze for almost five hours at Acme Brick in Holly Springs Sunday morning. Chief Kenny Holbrook said the main office building located at 700 Highway 7 North was a total loss. Hubbard named Marshall headmaster By BARRY BURLESON Jane Hubbard believes her strengths as a headmaster and Marshall Academy’s needs add up to a great fit. Hubbard, headmaster at Simpson Academy in Mendenhall since 1998, has been hired for the same job at MA. She will replace Tommy Gunn, who is leaving for Heritage Academy in Columbus at the end of the school year. Winkler case draws nationwide attention to Farese law firm By SUE WATSON Ashland attorney Steve Farese was driving in Memphis when he saw the Amber Alert, notifying the public that a Selmer, Tenn., mother and her three children were being sought, in what is now a murder case that rose to national prominence. Pilgrimage April 21-23 The city is sprucing up for the Holly Springs Tour of Historic Homes. The 68th annual Pilgrimage is slated for Friday-Sunday, April 21-23. It is sponsored by the Holly Springs Garden Club. Featured homes this year are Montrose, Crump Place, Airliewood, and Walter Place Estate, Cottages and Gardens. Other activities include a cemetery tour at Hill Crest followed by a reception at Fleur de Lis, Qeeen’s Ball at Montrose, Sunday afternoon tea and fashion show at Montrose, luncheons, carriage rides, organ recitals and tours of historic churches. Tickets can be purchased at the Marshall County library each day of the tour. Children under 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. A special Pilgrimage section will be published in next week’s edition of The South Reporter. County cracks burglary ring By SUE WATSON A construction site burglary ring was busted last week through a coordinated agency effort, according to Sheriff Kenny Dickerson. Taylor questions enforcement of city’s junk car ordinance By SUE WATSON Holly Springs is not enforcing its junk car ordinance, said Edythe Taylor, a resident of the Meadows. She said the city has had two years to enforce the ordinance and if it doesn’t do a better job, the city should throw the ordinances out. Taylor said there are from two to three junk cars at about every other house in the neighborhood and she alleges 20 cars are in front of her home on Shelby Street. Kuehl shares story of tragedy to influence young people By SUE WATSON Nine years ago Greg Kuehl lost his wife, young daughter and unborn son needlessly because of a drunk driver. Since then Kuehl, the son-in-law to Channel 5 weatherman Dave Brown, and Brown himself have told their stories in the hope of saving lives of youngsters as they prepare for Prom Night and for life.
