Howell’s 28 lifts Northwest to OT victory

Freshman guard Arnetta Howell of Potts Camp scored a season-high 28 points to lead the Northwest Mississippi Community College Lady Rangers to a 78-69 overtime victory against the Pearl River Lady Wildcats on the final day of the Gulf Coast Classic Nov. 22 in Wiggins.

Northwest, which lost to Gulf Coast 69-63 on the first day of the event, moved its record to 4-3.

Howell, who made nine of 17 attempts from the field and eight of 14 from three-point range, also grabbed six rebounds and was credited with six steals.

Sophomore guard Sharlene Murphy also turned in a solid performance for the Lady Rangers by scoring 18 points, grabbing 13 rebounds, dishing out five assists, and making five steals.

Northwest built a 58-50 lead with just over five minutes left to play, but Pearl River put together a 12-4 run to tie the game at 62-62 and send the game into the extra period.

Howell scored eight of Northwest’s 17 points in overtime to help the Lady Rangers pick up the victory.

Northwest freshman forward LaMaesha McAdory scored 14 of her team-high 19 points in the second half, but it wasn’t enough against Gulf Coast.

Murphy added 16 points for the Lady Rangers, while Porsche Blackmon added 11.

Northwest hosted Shorter College Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Howard Coliseum in Senatobia.
