Potts Camp runners place highly in meets


The Potts Camp boys recently claimed second in the Division 1-2A cross country meet and third at state.

In the division meet at Pontotoc on October 28, the Cardinals (35) finished behind champion East Union (22). William-Sullivan (80) took third.

Billy Mitchell placed second and set a personal and Potts Camp School record by running a time of 17:22. The school record was held by Stephen Brock (17:35) set back in 1995. Mitchell received a silver medal and an all-division medal.

Charlie Smith finished in fourth with a run of 17:36, a personal record and just one second from breaking the school record. He also made all-division.

The top 14 runners made all-division.

Other top Cardinals were Kevin Williams, eighth place, 19:28; Lee Clayton, 11th, 19:43; Dustin Minor, 12th, 20:28; Corey Totten, 13th, 20:35; and George Hampton, 14th, 20:48.

Other team members are Kevin Miller, Robert Loftin and Bruce Mapp.

On the girls’ side, Mantachie won the division meet.

Only one Lady Cardinal participated, and she won the meet. Amanda Barstow ran a time of 16:26, which was a personal record as well as a school record. The previous record was held by Tamekia Hampton (17:06), set back in 2003. Barstow received a gold medal as well as a medal for all division.

Stephanie Miller is also on the girls team but went down with a bad ankle sprain several weeks ago, according to coach Karen Green.

At the state meet at Choctaw Trails in Jackson, seven Cardinals finished in the top 32, led by Charlie Smith’s third-place finish (18:40.22). Billy Mitchell was seventh (19:06.67).

Others included Dustin Minor, 18th, 21:07.67; Kevin Williams, 19th, 21:15.76; Lee Clayton, 21st, 21:32.36; George Hampton, 25th, 21:54.29; and Corey Trotten, 32nd, 22:47.90.

The Cardinals trailed first-place St. Andrew’s (31) and second-place East Union (59) in the team competition. Potts Camp earned a score of 65.

Lady Cardinal Amanda Barstow placed 10th at the state meet with a time of 18:42.18.

Named all state were Smith, Barstow and Mitchell.
