According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of drunk-driving fatalities has decreased by 39 percent since 1982. And designated drivers have played a role in that progress, according to a recent survey that showed more than 72 percent of American adults have either been a designated driver or been driven home by one.

Local soldier receives award

FORWARD OPERATING BASE (FOB) DUKE, (AN-NAJAF) IRAQ – Sergeant Bernard Norman of Byhalia, a member of Headquarters & Headquarters Company Task Force 198, 155th Brigade Combat Team, was named Soldier of the Month for the month of July.

The honor was presented to Norman because service to the Task Force has distinguished him and his efforts have been instrumental in the security of the unit and the mission at Forward Operating Base Hotel.

He has been a member of the Mississippi Army National Guard for 21 years, and currently is assigned to Headquarters & Headquarters Company Task Force 198 as an Ammo Sergeant.

The 155 Brigade Combat Team is a U.S. Army National Guard unit assigned to II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III.
