Shepard Smith on alumni-student interactive forum at Ole Miss

A panel of the University of Mississippi’s high-profile alumni return to their alma mater Friday (Oct. 21) for the Student Alumni Council’s third annual alumni-student interactive forum.

The free, public program, “Bridging the Gap: Ole Miss’ Past and Present Working Together for the Future,” is set for 3-5 p.m. in Johnson Commons Ballroom. A reception follows the discussion.

“We are delighted that so many of our successful Ole Miss alums have offered their time to help our students,” said Sheila Dossett, assistant director of Alumni Affairs. “This is a wonderful opportunity for students to hear alumni share their experiences along the pathway to success.”

Alumni participants are Henry Jones, director of research and development at SmartSynch Inc.; Edith Kelly-Green, retired vice president for FedEx; Cooper Manning, vice president at Howard Weil, Inc.; Markeeva Morgan, engineering project manager at Naval Sea Systems Command; Bill Parsons, director of NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center; Gail Pittman, president and CEO of Gail Pittman, Inc.; and Shepard Smith, anchor at Fox News Channel.

Focus of the forum is not on “job-seeking” but rather “answer-finding,” allowing students to set benchmarks for success, said David Finnegan, president of the Student Alumni Council and an organizer of the event.

“Bridging the Gap is an effort to create an opportunity for alumni and students to network,” said Finnegan. “Ole Miss alumni are some of the most generous people, and they love to help Ole Miss students.

“This is a perfect time for students to ask questions about their hopeful careers from professionals who relate to many of the same experiences that they themselves are going through.

I hope that alumni feel closer to Ole Miss after attending this event and students feel more prepared for life after college.”
