Lady Patriots knock off North Delta, Carroll


Marshall Academy blanked both of its softball opponents last week and improved to 10-3 on the season.

The Lady Patriots traveled to North Delta School in Batesville on Monday, Aug,. 22, and one run in the first inning proved to be enough. They downed the Green Wave 1-0.

Mandy Bolden scored the winning run on a North Delta overthrow to second base.

“It came down to defense,” said head coach Louanne Tomlinson. “It was a tight game and a good defensive game.”

Winning pitcher Lauren Alexander faced 26 batters. She struck out three, and only nine reached base.

Leading hitters for MA were Allie Kriss and Mandy Bolden with two singles each, and Heather Tomlinson and Sam Gallimore with one hit each.

Marshall won the B-game 6-0. Anna Roberts had a triple. Kristen Feathers was the winning pitcher. She faced 10 batters and struck out six. Courtney Gibson threw in relief, facing four and striking out one.

On Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Carroll Academy, the Lady Patriots hit better and continued their fine defensive play as they routed the Rebels 9-0. It was their second win over Carroll this season.

“Defensively, there aren’t many who can compete with us,” Coach Tomlinson said. “We have to improve our hitting.”

Casey Gibson was the winning pitcher. She faced 23 batters, striking out four and only allowing five baserunners.

Alexander produced three hits, including two doubles. Brittney Tomlinson and Bolden had two singles each.

The B-team coasted to a 19-1 victory in two innings. Courtney Gibson and Feathers pitched. Gallimore had a triple and a single. Getting two singles each were Ali Hutchens, Callie Clanton, Roberts and Courtney Gibson. Desi Black had a double.

The Lady Patriots were scheduled to host North Delta on Monday of this week and the B-team was slated to play a twinbill at home against Lee (Ark.) on Wednesday.

Next Wednesday, Sept. 7, the Lady Patriots host Kirk Academy.

The District 1-AA Tournament is set for September 14.
