Doxey hosting Southern Nationals; nations best disc
golfers coming to town
Wall Doxey State Park will be the host site for flying disc enthusiasts over the Labor Day weekend.
Professional disc golfers from all over the United States will converge on Wall Doxey State Park near Holly Springs Sept. 3 and 4 to participate in the McDonalds® 2005 Southern Nationals Professional Disc Golf Championship.
Park Manager, Lyle Richardson said this event is billed to be the largest disc golf tournament in the State of Mississippi, Mississippi State Parks and the Southern National history. Thanks go to McDonalds in Holly Springs and McDonalds Corp. and affiliates as the First Corporate Sponsor of the Southern Nationals Professional Championship.
With McDonalds Corp. and affiliates, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks and many local businesses and hundreds of individuals sponsoring this tournament, we are expecting a large turnout due to the total purse of over $15,000, said Zack Hudson, tournament director. This will be the largest purse for an individual tournament in the Southern National history. As a result we have limited the field to 180 players.
Wall Doxey State Park is home to three disc golf courses. All three courses will be used during the tournament. However, a temporary course has been set up at Kirkwood National Golf Course just outside Holly Springs. This course will provide a long, wide open course which compliments the tighter wooded courses at Wall Doxey.
The Professional Disc Golf Associations number one ranked player, Barry Schultz, will be participating. The first and second place winners in the open professional divisions of the Worlds Tournament; first place Nathan Doss, and Barry Schultz and Matt Orum, who shared second place, will also attend.
Hudson invites everyone to come out this weekend and watch some great disc golf. Galleries are encouraged and needed during the tournament.
People who would like to volunteer to help with the tournament in any capacity, please contact Richardson.
We need spotters, traffic controllers, concession helpers and runners, Richardson said.
The players meeting and opening ceremonies will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at the multi-purpose field at Wall Doxey State Park. Tee-off will immediately follow. Late registration will be Friday, Sept. 2, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m at the park lodge. There will be no registration on Saturday.
