Pats beat Carroll, Lee
By BARRY BURLESON
Marshall Academy continued its winning ways last week on the softball diamond bettering conference opponents Carroll and Lee.
The Lady Patriots dominated Carroll 12-1 on Tuesday afternoon at home.
We split with them last year, and both games were close, coach Louanne Tomlinson said. This was a big win for us.
Casey Gibson carried the hot bat. She produced four singles and two runs-batted-in. Heather Tomlinson followed with two singles and an RBI. Lauren Alexander had two RBIs and Allie Kriss an RBI.
Alexander also earned the win from the pitchers mound.
Defense was a key in the 11-run victory. The Lady Patriots committed just one error. Kriss, playing right field, made a diving catch in the late innings.
The next day on the home field, Marshall Academy picked up its second win of the season over conference foe Lee (MS).
We played very good defense again (only two errors), Tomlinson said, but we werent hitting as well as we should.
H. Tomlinson and Mandy Bolden had two singles each. Adding a single each were Traci Rodgers and Alexander.
Another defensive highlight in the games last week was a catch by Rodgers in center field and a perfect throw home to H. Tomlinson, who tagged out a runner trying to tag up and score from third base.
Weve had some awesome plays, Coach Tomlinson said.
Were still young, but were playing well. Im proud of them.
The Lady Patriots, 8-3 on the season, were scheduled to visit North Delta on Monday of this week and then go to Carroll on Tuesday. Thursday, Aug. 25, they play Magnolia Heights at home at 4 p.m.
In B-team action last week, Marshall beat Carroll 13-0 and lost to Lee 6-5. Kristen Feathers and Courtney Gibson pitched in the two games.
A lot of the girls hit the ball, Tomlinson said. Theyre learning and doing well.
She said defensive errors in the first two innings cost the B-team Lady Patriots in the loss to Lee. The opposition scored three in first and three in the third.
