stars enjoy tourney success
The Marshall County 12 and under fast pitch softball all-stars participated in five tournaments during late June and July.
The team consisted of players from Holly Springs, Potts Camp and Byhalia and was coached by Barry Burk, Larry Hutchens and Suzanne Watkins.
The team played its first tournament at Horn Lake at the 301 Sports Complex. Their second tournament was played in Iuka. The team played in a third tournament at J.P. Hudson Park in Batesville. All three were invitational tournaments, and the Marshall County team played well in all of those tournaments. The team was in every game of each of the tournaments through the last inning.
Probably the best game the team played all summer was the one against Southaven in the Batesville Tournament. Through the regulation game of six innings, the score was tied at 5. Marshall County lost in the first extra inning, but it was to the same team that won the Dizzy Dean World Series in late July.
Marshall County played four games in the North Half State Tournament in Hernando. The girls played very well in the third game when they beat a Hernando team 15-4 that placed second in the Dizzy Dean World Series. It was one of the games in which the teams offense finally caught up with their tough offense.
The teams final tournament was in Southaven at the Dizzy Dean World Series. The team lost its final game 4-2 to another Hernando team that placed second in the North Half State Tournament.
The Marshall County all-stars would like to thank all of their sponsors for the opportunity to play in the five tournaments. They would also like to thank their parents, friends and other relatives who supported them. Even though the team did not win any of these tournaments, the girls played hard and represented Marshall County very well in each of the tournaments.
