Sting operation nets 43 arrests

Search and arrest warrants were served Wednesday, June 15, on suspects throughout Marshall County, according to Sheriff Kenny Dickerson. The arrests followed a large number of grand jury indictments, but a few local warrants were served.

The arrests followed a six-month undercover operation by officers of the Tri-County Narcotics Task Force and involved collaboration of 40 officers from Marshall, Benton and Tippah county sheriff departments, air support from Mississippi National Guard, Byhalia chief of police Mike Novay, and officers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

It was the largest roundup to date in the task force’s one year of operation and lasted from about 5 a.m. until late afternoon, Dickerson said. Some suspects were picked up in jurisdictions out of the county.

Law enforcement was attempting to serve 57 warrants for arrest, most for illegal drug activities but some for burglary, grand larceny and probation violation.

Lawyers with the District Attorney’s office and the U.S. Attorney’s office in Oxford were also on hand to offer legal advice, the sheriff said.

“We picked up in excess of 40, some on probation for sale of drugs, some out on bond on previous charges and those on probation awaiting a probation hearing with circuit court,” Dickerson said.

Dickerson said the Tri-County Task Force has made several hundred drug-related arrests in the three-county jurisdiction since it was formed a year ago.

“We are continuing to do our part to get the people who sell drugs off the street,” he said. “Illegal drug possession and sale contributes directly or indirectly to about 80 percent of all our crimes.”

The majority of the drug-related arrests in the Wednesday roundup were for possession or sale of crack cocaine, powder cocaine and crystal methamphetamine, he said.
