Girls of summer
New basketball league features county teams

There’s a new league in Marshall County this summer. And it’s in the gym.

A varsity girls summer basketball league has tipped off with teams participating from area schools like Potts Camp, Marshall Academy, H.W. Byers, Ashland, West Union, Ingomar, Fayette Academy, South Pontotoc and Myrtle.

I had some very lively discussions last week about the Pistons’ and the Heat’s final game. I allowed that the Heat would definitely prefer to have the last game bounced back to Miami. One had to believe that Shaq and his cohorts wanted to win that series in front of the hometown fans. And they almost did it.

Slayden church plans fall sports

Slayden Baptist Church will offer fall soccer and/or baseball/softball for ages 4 through 17.

Those interested should call 252-4559 and leave a message or Trilby West, 901-496-5455.

There will be a $40 registration fee for shirt, trophy and party at the end of the season. Parents must sign a liability form.


Thompson aces #4 at Kirkwood National

On June 5, Jerry Thompson of Ashland aced the Par 3, #4 hole (162 yards) at Kirkwood National using his eight iron. Witnesses to the hole in one were Ray Vance, Teddy Bryant and Gary Stanley.
