Lions knock off Rosa Fort


H.W. Byers basketball teams lost two to rival Ashland and split with Tunica Rosa Fort to wrap up the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule.

Tuesday, Dec. 13, the Lions and Lady Lions dropped 10- and nine-point decisions to the Blue Devils and Lady Blue Devils in district contests.

Byers led 24-20 at the half, but the Blue Devils ignited in the second half, outscoring the Lions 43-29 to secure the 63-53 victory.

Leading H.W. Byers were Terdarin Bryson with 12 points and Marvin Rayford with 11.

Three Ashland players hit for double digits – Mario Jones with 19, Calvin Hampton with 16 and Fred Moore with 15.

Ashland improved to 5-8 overall and 1-0 in district play.

The Lady Lions fell behind 20-1 after first quarter. They fought back in the next three quarters before falling 61-52.

Amelia Cunningham poured in 25 points for Byers in the loss.

Lifting the Lady Blue Devils to the win were Vakela Crawford and Sharon Traylor with 14 each, Martamara Richard with 11 and Labrita Hampton with 10.

Ashland upped its record to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in the district.

The Byers teams were on the road again Friday night – the girls falling 54-42 at Rosa Fort and the boys winning 59-47.

The Byers girls trailed undefeated Rosa Fort by only two, 37-35, after three quarters. The home team then went on a 17-7 run in the fourth quarter for the 12-point victory.

Cunningham had 12 for the Lady Lions, 6-10 overall and 1-1 in the district.

Nicholas Tate blistered the nets for 26 points as the Byers boys turned back Rosa Fort by 12. Justin Owens added 11.

The third quarter proved to be the difference for the Lions, 7-8 overall and 1-1 in district play. That’s when they outscored their opposition 15-7.

H.W. Byers plays in the McAdams Tournament December 26-31.
